Adult Offenders Facility

The mission of the Oglala Sioux Tribe Adult Offenders Facility is the Humane Confinement of individuals adjudicated as offenders of the law as prescribed in the penal code of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and to better our people by providing programs to improve the inmates lifestyle and to protect the public from those individuals whose actions are not condoned by the public and to serve everyone with respect and dignity. In order to accomplish our mission, the following will be applied:

  • Provide for the safe, secure, and humane custody and treatment of those individuals charged to our care by law and maintained under a system of direct supervision by our corrections staff.
  • Afford our corrections staff with the professional training and equipment to ensure a professional and safe working environment.
  • Establish and maintain an on-going and pro-active relationship with the community, entities providing programs and other law enforcement agencies and the courts.
  • Provide programs such as education, cultural aspects, life skills, domestic violence awareness, self improvement awareness and counseling to offenders with the goal of fulfilling their obligations to the criminal justice system, themselves, and the community
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Tribal, B.I.A. Detention standards, and Federal requirements pertaining to the operation of a correctional facility.
  • Provide chemical and substance abuse awareness programs.
  • Provide opportunities for Cultural and Spiritual growth.
  • Provide opporutnities for Restorative Justice via Community Service Projects.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Adult Offenders Facility policies and procedures manual will be the methodology used for meeting this mission statement in accordance with the sound correctional practices and the provisions outlined in the B.I.A. Adults Detention Handbook.

KiYuksa O'Tipi Reintegration Center

The mission of the KiYuksa O'Tipi Reintegration Center is to provide a safe and secure detention for male and female youths between the ages of 12 and 17, who are either pre or post-adjudicated and held under the authority of the OST Tribal Court and other federally recognized Tribal Court.

The Facility will not detain status offenders, such as curfew, runaway, truancy, ungovernable, youth in need of care.

The KiYuksa O'Tipi Reintegration Center will provide opportunities for rehabilitation of the youth detained through the provision of programs, opportunities for Cultural and Spiritual growth and volunteer services. Reintegration occurs through the active involvement of families, schools, courts, and other programs' providers which complies with a court order agreement.

Afford our corrections staff with the professional training and equipment to ensure a professional and safe working environment.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Dept. of Public Safety KiYuksa O'Tipi Reintegration Center Policies and Procedures manual will be the working methodology used for meeting this mission statement in accordance with sound correctional practices and the provisions outlined in the BIA Youth Detention Handbook.

 

Medicine Root Detention Center

The mission of the Medicine Root Detention Center is the Humane Confinement of individuals legally incarcerated as offenders of the law as prescribed in the penal code of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, to protect the public from those individuals whose actions are not condoned by the public, and to serve everyone with respect and dignity.

Provide for the safe, secure and humane custody and treatment of those individuals charged to our care by law and maintained under a system guided by standard operation procedures.

Afford our corrections staff with the professional training and equipment to ensure a professional and safe working environment.

Establish and maintain an on-going and pro-active relationship with the community, entities providing programs, other law enforcement agencies, and the courts.

Provide programs such as cultural aspects, public health, domestic violence awareness, community service, self improvement awareness, and counseling to offenders with the goal of fulfilling their obligations to the criminal justice system, themselves, and the community.

Ensure compliance with all applicable Tribal, B.I.A. detention standards and Federal requirements pertaining to the operation of a correctional facility. Provide opportunities for Cultural and Spiritual Growth.
